Is Ukraine's Sustainable Development - Under Threat?

May 13, 2019

Director of SE NPC Ukrenergo Vsevolod Kovalchuk believes that there are currently real threats to the development of renewable energy sector in Ukraine. Mr. Kovalchuk presented his vision to the public during his speech at the CISOLAR 2019 International Conference.

"The concept of sustainable development is wider than just reducing carbon emissions," the speaker said.

"Unfortunately, the maximum installed capacity of solar and wind power plants that the country’s electric power system can accept in the current state without changing the structure of another power generation capacities – provided that the system does not restrict the power generation by solar, wind and other RES, and nuclear power plants – is 4.75 GW, 3 GW of which are solar power plants and 1.75 GW – wind power facilities. And these figures will be reached at the end of 2019 for sure," reported Vsevolod Kovalchuk.

The speaker summed up that, as a system operator, Ukrenergo would be forced to restrict the issuance of technical specifications for nuclear power plants and renewable energy facilities – if technically feasible. In addition, the Director of the NP NEC "Ukrenergo" considers the maximum development of the “green” auction-model to be one of the most important energy security tools in the sector of renewables.
