Paris airports will work on solar energy

Paris-based international airport operator Groupe ADP has signed a 21-year PPA with French gas and electricity provider GazelEnergie and solar project developer Urbasolar for the electricity supply of its three airports of Paris-Charles-de-Gaulle, Orly and Le Bourget. This is reported by pv-magazine.

The airports will be provided with solar power by French solar company Urbasolar and energy provider GazelEnergie. The PV plants related to the contract are now in development and will begin delivering power in 2021.

“The next step will be to produce green energy ourselves as a part of our consumption, as we already do for our heat needs. We are already preparing the integration of photovoltaic solar energy into new infrastructure projects such as car parks and real estate buildings, as well as our Terminal 4 project,” said the company deputy CEO, Edward Arkwright.

The development of renewable energies is central to the company’s environmental policy to reduce its CO2 emissions. Solar parks will be developed on a 40 hectare site for a total production of 47 gigawatt-hours per year, the equivalent consumption of a town of 15,000 inhabitants. The electricity generated by the three solar parks is sufficient to supply about half of the energy needed for airport lighting.

“2020 will be the year of new impetus for the development of photovoltaic technology in France with the multiplication of PPA solar electricity supply contracts, and Urbasolar is particularly proud of the trust placed by Groupe ADP in the grouping formed with GazelEnergie,” stated Urbasolar chairman Arnaud Mine.

The solar projects by Urbasolar support Groupe ADP’s efforts to become carbon neutral by 2030. They come to join several renewable heat projects, including a deep geothermal system at Paris-Orly, a biomass plant at Paris-Charles de Gaulle (Paris-CDG) and a heat pump at Paris-Le Bourget. A deep geothermal system at Paris-CDG is also planned for commissioning in 2024.
