The world's biggest wind turbine launched by Siemens Gamesa

The Siemens Gamesa launches 14 MW offshore Direct Drive turbine with 222-meter rotor. The 14 MW capacity allows one SG 14-222 DD machine able to provide enough energy to power approximately 18,000 average European households every year. Approximately 30 SG 14-222 DD offshore wind turbines could furthermore cover the annual electricity consumption of Bilbao, Spain.

It is reported that this machine, a 14MW offshore design 25% more powerful than its next largest model, with plans to be market-ready by 2024.

"Safely and sustainably providing clean energy for our customers and society-at-large is at the core of all we do. The new SG 14-222 DD is a global product that allows all of us to take giant steps towards protecting and preserving our planet. We ourselves became carbon neutral in late 2019 and are on track towards meeting our long-term ambition of net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050. Our installed fleet of over 100 GW both offshore and onshore abates more than 260 million tons of CO2 emissions annually.", states Andreas Nauen, CEO of the Siemens Gamesa Offshore Business Unit.

Earlier this month, the European company said Covid-19 had a "direct negative impact" of 56 million euros ($61 million) on its profitability between January and March. This, it added, was equivalent to 2.5% of revenues during the quarter.

The pandemic has, in some parts of the world, altered the sources used to power society. At the end of April, for instance, it was announced that a new record had been set for coal-free electricity generation in Great Britain, with a combination of factors — including coronavirus-related lockdown measures — playing a role.

As a result, based on this achievement, we can say that renewable sources can be trusted.
